Andrew Vournas has been in specialty green coffee since 1988. 21 years in Green!  He has learned the coffee trade from the ground up, and has significant experience in warehousing, storage, delivering, cupping, importing, brokering and selling specialty green coffee. He has roasted in both retail and wholesale operations on a variety of commercial and sample roasters. He has assisted many retail and wholesale roasters in setting up their specialty coffee programs and business plans, as well as developing specific blends for their customers. Andrew has traveled extensively throughout numerous coffee source countries in Central America, South America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Rim. He has spoken at many coffee training seminars and conventions, has been selected as an International Jury cupping judge with the Cup of Excellence (Bolivia and Colombia), with the Pacific Coast Coffee Association has organized large cupping competitions, and recently completed two terms of service on the Board of Directors of the Pacific Coast Coffee Association.

Michael Vournas started in specialty green coffee importing in January 2002.  Drawn to the industry by coffee tales told to him by his brother, Andrew, and his love of a great cup of freshly roasted coffee, he previously worked in and managed several restaurants in the southern California area and has extensive public service experience at the city, county and federal levels of government.  He has traveled throughout most of the United States, a large portion of western Europe, Canada, northern Africa, and Australia, as well as Papua New Guinea, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Mexico and Hawaii. He enjoys assisting new roasters, cupping new coffees, and hunting down great coffees in source countries.  He recently was honored by the Pacific Coast Coffee Association (PCCA) as the 2006 Cupper of the Year, through the annual Pete McLaughlin Memorial Cupping Competition.  He has also served as a member of the International Jury with the Cup of Excellence (Nicaragua 2007).  Michael is currently serving a two year term as a member of the 08-09/09-10 PCCA Board of Directors.

Kathleen "Kat" Vournas, a/k/a the wonderful Mrs. Andrew Vournas, has joined the ranks of Vournas Coffee Trading this January 2009.  Kathleen brings great people and technical experience to us and we are very proud that she has joined us here on a part-time basis.  Kathleen comes to us with a background in marketing and fundraising.  While working for Harman International, a Fortune 500 company, she was an integral part of the creation and implementation of marketing programs for JBL and Harman Kardon.  She also has experience with Starbucks, and she came very close to opening up her very own coffee cart in downtown L.A..  She has done quite a bit of research and reading about coffee and the industry.  She will be working with us filling orders and facilitating traffic.

She loves coffee, and legend has it that she decided to marry Andrew when she found out he was an importer, (not to mention that during dates he exhuded a slight odor of Yemen Mocha from the nape of his neck).

The young voice you might hear the next time you call could be the second generation of the Vournas Coffee Trading family!  Christina Vournas has the unique title of being the first of the second generation of Vournas' to take a position at our family owned company.  Christina, Mike's middle daughter, will be helping us out part-time with many varied duties including phones, samples, sample roasting, filing and being learning the ways of green coffee.  She is a high school senior and an accomplished high school and competitive club water polo Goalie and 2 meter player.  In fact, in early November 2008, she signed a National Letter of Intent accepting an athletic water polo scholarship and a position on the California State University Monterey Bay's women's water polo team for the 2009/2010 season.  Go Otters!  Out of the pool, you will find that she allows your calls to get in the net, so to speak, and is happy to assist you and learn more about the coffee world.  Feel free to introduce yourself to the second generation of Vournas Coffee Trading!  I know Christina is very excited at the opportunity to role up her sleeves, meet people in the coffee world, and learn everything she can about specialty green coffee.  See our blog (through Links) for breaking news about Christina!
