Our 2021 Costa Rica Microlots

Hacienda Sonora Black Honey Microlot

After much anticipation, our slate of 2021 Costa Rican Microlots are ready for their debut. In recent years Costa Rica has been a leader in the specialty coffee industry in terms of their exploration of new and trending processing techniques as well as the farming of new hybrids, like Obata, that offer a rust-resistant sustainable promise to the next generation of farmers and consumers.

So at last, here we are!! Let’s check out what we have waiting for you to explore. Happy Roasting!

Costa Rica Hacienda Sonora Black Honey Microlot

Our newest addition to our family of Costa Rican Microlots is our Hacienda Sonora Black Honey Microlot, a Red Catuai variety. While home to many, many coffee varieties, Red Catuai is one of Costa Rica’s oldest and most endeared… at Hacienda Sonora it remains an obstinate and lasting favorite! Look for some added fruity complexity in the cup, a characteristic of the black honey process that helps accentuate Catuai’s natural acidity and balance the body that’s procured from Sonora’s pulping and drying process that sees 100% pulp preservation followed by 9 days of layered patio drying and another 3 days in warehouse at 14% humidity. This is not one to be easily forgotten! Read More . . .

Costa Rica Hacienda Sonora Obata Natural Microlot

Our Hacienda Sonora Obata Natural Microlot is a natural processed Red Obata coffee variety that produces a complex cup with some fruity notes and accompanying accents of chocolate and caramel. Thanks to father and son growers, Alberto and Diego Guardia, we are able to showcase this unique variety, a cross between Timor and Villa Sarchi which was initially developed in Brazil and later introduced to Costa Rica in 2014. It is designed to be a highly productive variety of arabica with a high tolerance to rust. We received excellent feedback on last year’s crop, and to be sure this new 2021 lot is a worthy sequel. Costa Rica Olman Ureña Honey Microlot

Third generation farmer, Olman Ureña Salazar has been producing coffee on his farm for over 25 years. Now in its second year on our roster, the Olman Ureña Honey Microlot features a wonderfully complex and fruity cup with a vivid brightness and great body. His lots are processed by the state-of-the-art Palmichal micro mill, situated in between Tarrazu and the Central Valley. The facility includes sun drying patios, raised beds and a greenhouse with specially designed drum dryers for more inclement weather. We are very excited to be able to again feature Mr. Urena’s 2021 crop in our lineup of Costa Rican microlots. Read More . . .
