Our Guatemala Antigua Santo Domingo is a wonderful coffee from the areas that surround the Spanish colonial town of Antigua, located just outside Guatemala City. This is a genuine Antigua offering, and not an “Antigua-type” Guatemala. Our Guatemala Antigua Santo Domingo is comprised of washed bourbon and caturra arabica varieties and its cup has a good acidity and body, and a real nutty and somewhat spicy finish.
Good acidity and balanced body, pronounced nuttiness and slightly spicy finish.
This Guatemala Antigua Santo Domingo offering follows a long chain of great Guatemalan coffees. Coffee was first introduced to Guatemala around 1750, but it wasn’t until 1870 when German immigrants began farming coffee that production and quality really improved. In the early 20th century the Antigua region became famous for its coffee, as it rivaled the best coffees in the world when introduced to European coffee buyers. Nowadays the Guatemalan Coffee Federation takes an active role in the verification of Guatemalan coffee classifications and origin varieties. Antigua has three active volcanoes, which help to nourish Antigua top soil with volcanic ash—over the years this has greatly contributed to a very fertile conditions for the production of high quality arabica, though at any time they can still erupt.
